Renato Matos is the Managing Partner of the firm. He routinely represents religious and not-for-profit corporations on complex real estate transactions including purchases and sales, long-term ground leases, air rights transfers, joint ventures and affordable housing development projects. He represents numerous denominational governing bodies, including the Atlantic District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, the Metropolitan New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Northeastern Conference of Seventh Day Adventists, the Presbytery of Long Island and the Board of Trustees of the New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, as well as individual denominational and non-denominational congregations of all faiths.
Joseph Milano is a Litigation Partner with Capell Barnett Matalon & Schoenfeld LLP. A former Special Assistant to the New York State Attorney General, he has successfully represented clients facing complex legal issues in federal and New York State trial and appellate courts and administrative tribunals for over 30 years. As the lead litigator in the firm’s Religious Law Practice, Joe helps clients adeptly navigate First Amendment constitutional and ecclesiastical issues, representing religious denominations, including Lutheran, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, Muslim, and Buddhist congregations, in their interactions before secular courts. Joe also counsels on crisis management strategies, representing them in their response to allegations against them.
David de Barros is a member of the firm’s Real Estate and Not-for-Profit and Religious Organizations practice groups, representing and counseling clients in all aspects of complex and large-scale real estate transactions, including advising on purchases and sales of properties, long-term leases, joint venture agreements, and construction, design, and other development-related agreements.
Jodi Warren is a Partner in the firm’s Real Estate and Not-for-Profit and Religious Organizations practice groups. She serves as counsel to numerous religious and not-for-profit organizations on sophisticated real estate transactions, including long-term and short-term leases, purchases and sales of real property, joint ventures, financing, and development projects.
Travis has extensive experience guiding individual and business clients to successful outcomes. Travis’s experience entails complex corporate matters involving venture-backed startup companies, contracts and transactions, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and day-to-day corporate, employment, and intellectual property matters. Travis is especially experienced with working with clients on securities offerings and other corporate and equity transactions through successive rounds of funding.
Peter manages the litigation practice group which litigates before New York, Florida and California’s state and federal trial and appellate courts.
Peter prides himself in having established a reputation as a fierce advocate for his clients who knows how to leverage his litigation skills to achieve a successful resolution, whether it be through trial or a pragmatic settlement. He has personally tried several dozen cases and settled well over a thousand in his nearly 30 years of practice.
Alexandra Columbo practices in the area of Real Estate, Corporate and Commercial Transactions, and Religious and Charitable Organizations. Alexandra received her B.A. from University of Miami and her J.D. from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.
Michelangelo Macchiarella is a part of the litigation team at Capell Barnett Matalon & Schoenfeld LLP, and primarily focuses on the areas of Real Estate, Construction, Landlord-Tenant, Religious Corporations, and Commercial Litigation.
Michelangelo graduated cum laude from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco and received his B.A. in Latin and Ancient Greek, magna cum laude, from the University of California, Berkeley. He is admitted in New York State, the Southern District of New York, and California.
William McManus’ practice focuses on advising not-for-profit, religious, and tax-exempt entities on matters of corporate governance, compliance with state and federal not-for-profit regulations, internal investigations and regulatory enforcement actions.
William is experienced in guiding New York not-for-profit and religious corporations in their formation and governance, and regularly advises clients on tax-exemptions and regulations of tax-exempt organizations. Additionally, William counsels clients on the management of their assets, including charitable giving and endowments, with a strong emphasis on the real estate needs of those entities.
Katie joined CBMS as an associate in the litigation department, focusing in the areas of Real Estate, Construction, Landlord-Tenant, Religious Corporations, and Commercial Litigation. Katie earned her LL.B. from the U.K. and her LL.M. in Banking, Corporate & Financial Law from Fordham Law School.
Katie served as a judicial intern to the Honorable Margaret Chan at the New York County Supreme Court, Commercial Division, where she assisted in the legal research and drafting of opinions. In the past, Katie was an associate at international law firms in Vietnam where she participated in multiple M&A transactions and advised foreign investors in establishing their business presence in Vietnam. Katie is admitted in New York State and is fluent in English and Vietnamese.
